Minella Trump helps Hughes trump opposition with Perth double

BRIAN HUGHES was all smiles after winning the feature race aboard Minella Trump at Perth on Thursday.

Carrying the colours of Tim Leslie and trained by Donald McCain, the 7-2 chance saw off long-time leader Gortroe Joe by three and a half lengths in the £12,000 Tay FM’S Wake Up With Webster Handicap Hurdle.

Hughes said: “I’d say he was tiring slightly rather than idling on the run-in. He’d been chasing and ran pretty well on his last two races over hurdles.

“He sees out this 2m 4f well and he stays three miles as we were first past the post only to lose the race after a stewards’ inquiry at Bangor in February. It is always great to win for Tim Leslie as he has been such a tremendous supporter of Donald’s over the years.”

Hughes had earlier been successful for Irish trainer Stuart Crawford in division one of the Slater Menswear Follow Us @slatermenswear Maiden Hurdle.

Olly Murphy also recorded a double as the Warwickshire trainer struck with Hooroo and St Lawrence Gap partnered by Aidan Coleman and David England respectively.
