Musselburgh – Report 23rd June 2023

Gordon Brown – Race Reporter

Gordon has a wealth of experience of racing through his background in the written and broadcast media. His current principle role is reporting and supporting the scene in Scotland on Racing TV and relaying the latest news with Scottish angles.

How Bizarre made virtually all to gain his fifth Musselburgh course win on Friday evening in the GTC Apprentice Handicap under Aiden Brookes.

Trained by Liam Bailey, he was sent off 9-4 favourite before pipping Chinese Spirit into second place.

“I watched some of his previous runs here as I had never ridden him before,” said Brookes. “Liam said he loves bowling along in front and, that when horses come to him, he digs deep and finds more.”

Poet Master produced a pleasing debut to win the C & P  Recruitment & Boogies Disco Cup Maiden Stakes.

Despite showing signs of immaturity, Karl Burke’s 5-6 favourite was well on top of runner-up Belinda Bell passing the post.

“I would ride him differently next time as he broke well and saw a lot of daylight on his first race,” said winning jockey Sam James. “He’s a lovely prospect and I know they quite like him at home.”
