Crowds and Prize Money Up As Musselburgh Hosts Final Jumps Meeting
Musselburgh Racecourse’s final jumps meeting of the season tomorrow (Thursday 16 Feb) marks one of their most successful National Hunt seasons to date.
It’s the first time the East Lothian course has staged nine meetings and only suffered one abandonment due to weather, compared to three the previous year. Total attendance sits at more than 11,000 before tomorrow’s meeting, compared to just over 8000 last season and crowds are up by 5% on the five corresponding fixtures held in 2010/11 and 2011/12.
The racecourse is also ending the season on a high following its successful John Smith’s Scottish Cheltenham Trials last weekend. A combination of factors, including severe winter weather across most of the UK which hit other courses, favoured Musselburgh and it was the only UK jumps course in action over the weekend.
Musselburgh Racecourse general manager, Bill Farnsworth, said: “From the disappointment of having to abandon the John Smith’s meeting on 5 February, Lady Luck shone on us and we were able to stage an additional fixture which grabbed all the headlines.
“It was a great opportunity to showcase the quality of horses and trainers which have made this meeting a genuine trials fixture for the Spring festivals proper at Cheltenham and Aintree. Attendances are up and the quality and prize money has improved, all making for one of our best ever National Hunt seasons.”
Jim Goldie withdrew Kaolak from last Saturday's Scottish County Hurdle but the six year old looks to have a sound chance of making a successful reappearance in tomorrow’s £10,000 Scottish Racing Your Best Bet Handicap Hurdle. Kaolak made all the running in the hands of the inform Richie McGrath to beat Eagle Nest over course and distance in January.
The time of that race was fast and McGrath is again in the saddle on Kaolak but unbeaten hurdler Simply Ned presents a serious danger. Nicky Richards' progressive five year old gained a comfortable success over Royal Opera on his handicap debut at Musselburgh last month and like Kaolak he was a late absentee from the Scottish County Hurdle.
Lucinda Russell, a leading contender for Musselburgh’s top trainer title, can boost her chances with a winning double at the final jumps meeting. Stable jockey Peter Buchanan partners the reliable Vallani in the 3 mile Handicap Hurdle, and after two creditable placed efforts over course and distance, this tough front runner would not be winning out of turn. Part owned by Scotland football manager Craig Levein, Via Archimede ran out a brave winner at Musselburgh on his latest appearance and gives Russell two bites at the cherry in the same race.
The Eldon Hills Stables once again sponsor the Hunters Chase (4.15) which last year was won by Zensky who went on to land the prestigious Christies Foxhunters Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. Zensky is currently on the sidelines with injury and Spellchecker can take full advantage of his absence. Runner up to the useful Abragante in a Sedgefield Hunters Chase last May, Spellchecker has recently run well in a competitive point to point and will be suited by the two and a half mile trip with the experienced Miles Seston in the saddle.
Gates open at noon and the first race is off at 1.40pm.

Musselburgh Puts 1000 Free Tickets Up At UK's Only Saturday Jumps Meeting
All eyes are on Musselburgh tomorrow (Sat 11 Feb) as it takes centre stage as the only jumps fixture in the UK.
With Newbury announcing its meeting is abandoned, Channel 4 will televise four races at the John’s Smith’s Scottish Cheltenham Trials over the East Lothian course.
And as a boost to racing fans desperate for live National Hunt action, Musselburgh is putting up 1000 free admission tickets for the £80,000 meeting which has attracted a hugely competitive field.
The free ticket promotion was announced on social media sites Twitter and Facebook and went live at noon. Race goers can only secure the free tickets by visiting the racecourse website, www.musselburgh-racecourse.co.uk and following the normal booking procedure.
A minimum of 1000 tickets are available up until midnight (Friday) and no telephone bookings will be accepted.
As a result of the live television coverage the running order has been changed and race times altered by five minutes.
Musselburgh Racecourse general manager, Bill Farnsworth, said:”With UK race cards decimated due to the weather the spotlight falls on us as the only jumps meeting on Saturday and we have lined up an excellent card with increased prize money.
“It has been a rollercoaster week for racing fans with on/off meetings and to reward our loyal customers we are putting up a minimum of 1000 free tickets on a first come basis. We hope it adds to what will be a great atmosphere with some of the leading trainers making the trip with a selection of their Cheltenham and Aintree prospects.
“The course is frost free, we’ve had some overnight rain and the forecast is 8 for Saturday so we are all set for an excellent days racing and we would encourage race goers to come along and enjoy the quality that is on show.”
The first race is at 1.30pm and the running order is:
01.30 THE JOHN SMITH'S NOVICES' HURDLE RACE (CLASS 4)
02.05 THE JOHN SMITH'S SCOTTISH TRIUMPH HURDLE (A JUVENILE HURDLE RACE) (CLASS 3) C4
02.35 THE JOHN SMITH'S STAYERS' HANDICAP HURDLE RACE (CLASS 3) C4
03.10 THE JOHN SMITH'S SCOTTISH CHAMPION STEEPLE CHASE (A HANDICAP) (CLASS 3) C4
03.45 THE JOHN SMITH'S SCOTTISH COUNTY HURDLE (A HANDICAP RACE) (CLASS 3) C4
04.20 THE JOHN SMITH'S FUTURE CHAMPIONS NOVICES' STEEPLE CHASE (CLASS 3)
04.50 THE JOHN SMITH'S HANDICAP HURDLE RACE (CLASS 3)

Strong Entries for Musselburgh's Replacement John Smith's Cheltenham Trials
Despite the prospect of Newbury going ahead and a bonus jumps card being staged at Kempton, Saturday's John Smith's replacement Scottish Cheltenham Trials meeting at Musselburgh has attracted a highly competitive turnout.
A maximum field is probable for the John Smiths' Scottish County Hurdle with the majority of last Sunday's declared runners standing their ground and additional interest being stimulated by the inclusion of last year's Cheltenham Festival winner Divers and recent course winner Simply Ned. Nicky Richards also has the latter pencilled in for Kelso next Wednesday, so should Simply Ned be declared overnight for Saturday's race at Musselburgh, he would be a likely contender.
The course and distance winner Kaolak, trained by Jim Goldie and the probable mount of Graham Lee, is sure to give Scottish racegoers an excellent run for their money.
Lucinda Russell sounded optimistic about the chances of her runners for last Sunday's abandoned fixture and with three winners at Ayr the following afternoon, the Milnathort trainer will be anticipating further success from Bold Sir Brian in the Novices Chase and Quito Du Tresor in the John Smith's Scottish Champion Chase.
Due off at 3.25, the Champion Chase will be ultra-competitive with the Lucinda Russell pair of Quito Du Tresor and Santa's Son being taken on by the likes of the Ferdy Murphy trained De Boitron, Mick Easterby's Lightning Rod and the lightly raced Woody Waller, formerly with Howard Johnson and now trained by John Wade in Co. Durham. Woody Waller, an encouraging second when giving away weight to the consistent Storm Surge at Haydock last time out, has to be fancied to go one better.
With Nicky Henderson opting to keep his horses close to home at Newbury and Kempton, Saturday's reopened John Smiths' Scottish Triumph Hurdle Trial could develop into a match between John Ferguson's Newmarket juvenile Creekside and John Quinn's duo, Blue Destination and Uncle Bryn. The latter has been narrowly beaten in each of his recent runs over hurdles and is the preferred mount of Dougie Costello, the stable jockey.
Gates open at Musselburgh on Saturday at 11.30am and the first race is of at 1.10pm. Pre-purchased tickets for 5 February meeting can be used on Saturday or within 90 days up to 4 May.

Henderson Spies Victor Chandler Morebattle Hurdle for Binocular
Since taking over sponsorship in 2010, the Victor Chandler Morebattle Hurdle has attracted some of the best Champion Hurdle contenders of recent times- the Border track has been graced by the presence of Triumph hurdle winner Zaynar, followed up in 2011 by the great Peddlers Cross who came so gallantly close to defeating the brilliant Hurricane Fly in the Cheltenham Champion Hurdle.
This years renewal will be no less exhilarating with the prospect of the J P McManus owned Binocular visiting the Border Track for the Victor Chandler Morebattle Hurdle on Wednesday 15th February.
After the abandonment of Binoculars’ intended Sandown target over the weekend, trainer Nicky Henderson suggested three possible alternatives for the 2010 Champion Hurdle winner to complete his Cheltenham preparation - The Morebattle Hurdle at Kelso, The Kingwell Hurdle at Wincanton or a trip to Gorwan Park in Ireland.
Kelso racecourse Managing Director Richard Landale commented “The Prospect of Binocular running in the Victor Chandler Morebattle Hurdle is extremely exciting. Donald McCain used the race as a prep for Peddlers Cross last year and he ran a cracker in the Champion Hurdle - so the timing of the race works perfectly with Cheltenham”
Opposition to Binocular in the Morebattle may come from Tap Night, owned by Peter Buchanan’s sister Jane. Tap Night has been impressive in back-to-back wins at Carlisle and Newcastle with connections eyeing this as a possible hat-trick target. Simply Ned is unbeaten in three starts over hurdles this season and Nicky Richards is looking to add this prestigious contest to the tally for his highly-rated Greystoke youngster.
The supporting card on Wednesday 15th February has attracted a quality entry, the first race off at 1.40pm, a two mile ½ furlong Novice Hurdle, will see Lucinda Russell expect to be represented by the Geoff Adam owned Rhymers Ha’, who was a cracking second on his hurdling debut over course and distance on December 29. Nicky Richards is also considering this for his Musselburgh New Year’s Day winner Abbey Garth.
A group of around 55 of the Kelso Races Annual Members have kindly contributed to the prize money of the opening Novice Chase. Becoming a race sponsor for the day allows the Kelso Annual Members to enjoy the days racing from the privacy of their own box and celebrate with winning connections after this exciting two mile one furlong Novice chase. Beidh Tine Anseo, a winner over hurdles at Kelso last spring, could have his chasing debut in this, according to his trainer Lucinda Russell. The Donald McCain trained Chester Lad was impressive on his chasing bow at Newcastle recently and could reappear in this for his Co Durham owners.
Stuart Tiffin of Oswald Hughes Electricals Ltd has generously sponsored the Handicap Hurdle off at 2.40pm. This privately owned electrical contacting company has over 60 years experience and is based in Seahouses. The company has vast experience in all areas of general electrical work to high tech specialist assignments. Oswald Hughes are based in North Northumberland but are happy to travel outside the area for any large contracts. Sandy Forster’s Nisaal, a gallant runner-up at Wetherby recently, will be fancied to go one better in this hurdle for his Yetholm yard.
First time sponsors to Kelso, The Amateur Jockeys Association have taken the Amateur Riders Handicap Chase run over two miles six and half furlongs. This is in recognition of a memorable 2010/2011 National Hunt season which culminated in Sam Waley-Cohen winning the Gold Cup, the first amateur to do so since Jim Wilson in 1981. The BHA put aside £30,000 of last season’s amateur prize money which was won against professionals and Sam Waley Cohen was asked to determine the distribution of these funds. He chose £20,000 to be held by the BHA for investment in Amateur rider’s races.
Kelso Races are happy to announce that they have been chosen as the first course to receive part of this generous funding in staging this Amateur riders chase. Sarah Oliver Chief Executive of the AJA will be making the winning presentations of this competitive race which may see Premier Sagas, already the winner of a chase and a bumper at Kelso among the entries according to his handler Nicky Richards.
Connolly’s Red Mills, the well known Irish horse feed company have kindly sponsored the first Hunter Chase of the season at Kelso Races. The company was established in 1908 and has long been associated with producing premium, high performance equine feeds which is sold across the world. David Dickenson will be on hand to make the presentations which may see Cloudy Lane, who has competed in three Grand Nationals and is now trained by Donald McCain’s wife Sian, a possible for this after a cracking second to Chapoturgeon on his hunter chase debut at Newbury last month.
The final race of the day off at 4.40pm is a Fillies and Mares bumper jointly sponsored by Doncaster Bloodstock Sales and The European Breeders Fund. This is a qualifying race for the final at Sandown which is aimed specifically at giving fillies and mares race experience whilst only taking on their own sex. Donald McCain’s Doyly Carte carries the colours of the Elite Racing Club and she won comfortably on her first racecourse appearance at Catterick last month. Nicky Richards may enter the nicely bred daughter of High Chaparral Isabelle B.

RICH CHASE HIGHLIGHT OF VALENTINE’S RACEDAY
AYR Racecourse stages a Valentine’s Raceday on Tuesday with the bumper eight race card coming under starter’s orders at 1.20 pm.
The highlight of the afternoon is the £15,500 Play Casino At BetVictor.Com Handicap Chase over two miles four furlongs due off at 3.25 pm. This Class 2 event is the one of the richest jumps races run outside the Coral Scottish Grand National meeting and should attract a quality field of runners.
Other races include the Best Odds At BetVictor.Com Novices’ Hurdle over two miles and the BetVictor.com Handicap Chase over three miles one furlong. The final race is due off at 5.05 pm.
Ayr’s BetVictor Raceday on Monday saw Lucinda Russell saddle a treble bringing her seasonal total to 40 winners.
The Perth trainer won the opening BetVictor.com Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle with Lucia Bay (6/4) ridden by Campbell Gillies. The second leg of the hat trick came via the impressive Blenheim Brook (7/2) in the Best Odds At BetVictor.com Novices’ Chase who prevailed by a length and a half from the even money favourite Lie Forrit.
And Lucinda was ecstatic when Quacity (13/2) romped clear to win at the 12th attempt in the Watch Live Racing At BetVictor.com Novices’ Handicap in the hands of Peter Buchanan who also rode Blenheim Brook.
Borders trainer Sandy Forster saddled See The Legend (6/1) to win the BetVictor.com Handicap Hurdle and riding sensation Lucy Alexander steered Big Water to win the national hunt flat race. That brought Lucy her 21st winner in her first season riding professionally.

Musselburgh Racecourse has been granted an extra fixture on Saturday (11 Feb) after it was forced to abandon last weekend’s £90,000 feature jumps meeting due to frost.
The East Lothian track will rerun its John Smith’s Scottish Cheltenham Trials meeting after the British Horseracing Authority approved an application to hold an extra fixture.
With tomorrow’s (Wednesday) meetings at Carlisle, Lingfield and Ludlow abandoned and inspections planned for Doncaster and Huntingdon’s Thursday meetings, Musselburgh will take centre stage for hard pressed trainers and owners desperate to field potential runners for the Cheltenham and Aintree festivals.
The John Smith’s race day is Musselburgh’s feature jumps meeting of the season and the second richest National Hunt fixture in Scotland. It is recognised as an important prep meeting for many stables before deciding which horses will go on to compete at the major Spring festivals.
Musselburgh Racecourse general manager, Bill Farnsworth, said: “We are delighted to get the green light fro the BHA to stage this extra fixture and this decision will be welcomed across the racing industry.
“With numerous fixtures being disrupted across the country there is dire lack of opportunities for trainers and owners to field their favoured horses for Cheltenham and Aintree. I am sure this will be reflected in the quality and number of entries we receive for Saturday’s meeting which will provide the ideal preperation for many horses destined for greater things.”
Musselburgh’s management were left frustrated and disappointed after an early morning inspection forced Sunday’s abadondment, with parts of the track remaining frozen and a danger to horses and jockeys.
For further updates follow Musselburgh’s Facebook and Twitter feeds or visit the website www.musselburgh-racecourse.co.uk
Gates open at 11.30am, first race is at 1.15pm. Pre-purchased tickets for 5 February meeting can be used on 11 February or within 90 days up to 4 May.

Lucinda Rustles Up Top Trio For Musselburgh’s John Smith’s Scottish Cheltenham Trials
Leading Scottish trainer, Lucinda Russell, has praised Musselburgh for developing its highlight John Smith’s jumps meeting on Sunday (5 Feb) as a true test for Cheltenham and Aintree bound prospects.
The Milnathort based trainer has nine entries in the John Smith’s Scottish Cheltenham Trials and has high hopes that at least three will show signs that they can produce the goods at the highest level.
With £88,000 in prize money, including three £20,000 races, Musselburgh has established this February race day as a top draw for stables as far apart as Newmarket, Lambourn, Cheshire and North Yorkshire.
“In the current climate Musselburgh has done exceedingly well in keeping its prize money up for owners,” said Russell. “The John Smith’s Scottish Cheltenham Trials is a great addition to the jumps calendar with some very valuable races and it’s one that owners and trainers aim for throughout the season.
“Another important element is that we can use these trials to see how good our horses are before we take them to Cheltenham and in that respect these prep races are very exciting for us and the owners.”
Quito Du Tresor is entered for both the Champion Chase (2.30) and the Scottish County Hurdle (4.00) but Russell revealed that the Chase looks favourite.
She said: “At the moment it is looking more like the Chase and from there we will go to Cheltenham for the two mile Grand Annual handicap. We also have Santa’s Son in the Chase and this will be a prep race for Aintree’s Grand National meeting where we are aiming for the Topham Chase.
“The other horse we are really excited about is Bold Sir Brian (John Smith’s Future Champions Novices’ Chase 3.30) who is an excellent novice chaser, probably one of the best horses we have this season, and may get an outing at one of the Cheltenham novice chases.”
Other leading trainers making the trip to Musselburgh include Nicky Henderson, Richard Fahey, Nicky Richards, and Newmarket’s John Ferguson. Closer to home Jim Goldie and James Ewart will be doing their best to ensure the bulk of the prize money remains in Scottish hands and will give the raiders a run for their money.
Always keen to innovate, Musselburgh introduces a new race, the John Smith’s Scottish Champion Steeple Chase and the best two miler collects the Bowes-Lyon Cup, named in honour of David Bowes-Lyon who recently retired as a director of Musselburgh Racecourse.
Musselburgh Racecourse general manger, Bill Farnsworth, is predicting another cracking day of National Hunt action at the East Lothian course. He said: “This is the richest jumps fixture yet staged at Musselburgh and that is reflected in the quality of entries and the geographic spread of the stables heading our way.
“We are grateful to John Smith’s for their ongoing support in building up this flagship fixture and we are in talks with the brewer to strengthen our relationship, with possibly other fixtures benefiting from their sponsorship.”
With the weather conditions improving over the weekend and a forecast 7 for Sunday, Musselburgh is confident the meeting will go ahead.
Gates open on Sunday at 11.30am and first race on the seven card meeting is at 1.30pm.

Record Jumps Money at Musselburgh in John Smith's Scottish Cheltenham Trials
At just a touch under £90,000 Musselburgh is putting up record prize money for its feature jumps meeting of the season on Sunday (5 Feb) with the John Smith’s Scottish Cheltenham Trials.
Three £20,000 races and a supporting £12,000 race has caught the attention of leading stables from as far apart as Newmarket, Lambourn, Cheshire and North Yorkshire, with the indigenous Scottish stables poised to ensure the raiders don’t disappear with the bulk of the booty.
Musselburgh has made a concerted effort to establish this fixture as genuine trials or prep meeting for the major Spring festivals, starting with Cheltenham and on to Aintree and the Grand National in April.
The John Smith’s Scottish County Hurdle is billed as a run out for the top handicap hurdlers fancying a shot at Cheltenham’s County Hurdle and Nicky Henderson will be looking to repeat his 2009 victory in this race when Eradicate won. The leading Lambourn trainer holds a powerful hand this year with Crystal Rock and Dubai Crest but Henderson will not have matters easy this time round.
Richard Fahey is sending his talented Ingleby Spirit in search of his third consecutive Musselburgh success, while Cumbrian trainer Nicky Richards is optimistic that Simply Ned will follow up last month's popular win in the TurfTV Handicap Hurdle. Scottish trainers Jim Goldie and James Ewart are equally confident of a bold showing from New Year’s Day winner Kaolak and Allow Me.
A decent run in the £20,000 John Smith's Scottish Triumph Hurdle could lead to a pop at the Triumph Hurdle proper at Cheltenham and this race has piqued the interest of Newmarket's John Ferguson who is enjoying a fine season with his ex-Godolphin flat racers. His final choice between dual winners Asaid and Creekside will have to be seriously respected but the value could lie with the Malton-trained Blue Destination and John Quinn's four year old – a runner up in both his recent outings over hurdles - looks a progressive type poised to improve with experience.
Always keen to innovate, Musselburgh introduces a new race, the John Smith’s Scottish Champion Steeple Chase Handicap and the best two miler collects the Bowes-Lyon Cup, named in honour of David Bowes-Lyon who recently retired as a director of Musselburgh Racecourse.
A tartan version of Cheltenham’s Queen Mother Champion Chase, albeit a handicap, the race will feature razor sharp competition amongst the top northern stables. With front runners like Carrietau, Laterly, Storm Surge and Quito Du Tresor among the entries a strong gallop will be assured and the early pace could play to the advantage of Time Out. Langholm trainer James Ewart has already saddled the nine year old to score three times this season and Time Out's ability to act round sharp tracks and his proven stamina will both be in his favour.
“It sets the stage for a superb day on Sunday and I expect an old fashioned north/south tussle will make for very interesting racing. I won’t be surprised if the furthest travelled trainers don’t get it all their own way which can only be good for the paying race goer.“We are grateful to John Smith’s for their ongoing support in building up
this flagship fixture and we are in talks with the brewer to strengthen our relationship, with possibly other fixtures benefiting from their
sponsorship.”
Gates open on Sunday at 11.30am and first race on the seven card meeting is at 1.30pm.

Jockey Lucy Alexander will be the lassie to toast at Musselburgh’s Burns Day meeting tomorrow (Wed 25 Jan) if she guides Red Tanber to another success.
The bookmakers have already been forced to pay out three times this winter on the Bruce Mactaggart trained chestnut and a fourth win can’t be ruled out in the £6,000 Bunny Maitland-Carew Handicap Chase (3.40).
Red Tanber has forged a close rapport with Alexander and her 5lb allowance will help offset her mount’s significant rise up the handicap as the course specialist goes up against top weight Heavenly Chorus.
Ingleby Spirit will be a warm order to land the Tom McConnell Trophy (2.40) which remembers the popular Scottish racing journalist of the 1990's. Richard Fahey's useful dual purpose gelding proved too smart for the promising Bowdler's Magic at Musselburgh's Christmas meeting and his flat race speed should again prove decisive.
The £10,000 Boogie In The Morning Handicap Hurdle has attracted a most competitive field in which the value could lie with Dontpaytheferryman. Brian Ellison's versatile performer failed to attract a bid after winning the seller at the last Musselburgh meeting but the seven year old is better than the average plater and, back in the winning groove, will be fancied to build on his latest success.
Gates open at 11.30am and the first race in a six card meeting is at 1.40pm. The next race meeting at Musselburgh is the Scottish Cheltenham Trials Race Day on Sunday 5 February.

MUSIC, RACING AND GLAMOUR IN AID OF STV APPEAL

Musselburgh Racecourse has pipped some of the UK’s leading tracks to win the Dual Purpose Award in the Neil Wyatt Racecourse Groundstaff of the Year Awards.
The awards recognise the hard work, planning and innovation that goes in to keeping racecourses in tip-top condition and Musselburgh was first past the post ahead of Ascot in the dual flat and jumps category.
Musselburgh’s head of ground staff, Mark Bemrose, and his team were praised by the judging panel for “the improvements in the racing surface at Musselburgh, along with the high standards in all areas and the involvement of the team in development of the new stable complex”.
The Awards are sponsored by Pithcare.com and are now in their 16th year. The judges comprised of representatives of the National Trainers Federation and Professional Jockeys’ Association, with support from the BHA Inspectors of Courses.
Richard Linley, Senior BHA Inspector of Courses, said: “It was an extremely difficult decision for the panel to select a winner in each category for the Pitchcare Neil Wyatt Groundstaff Awards 2011, as yet again groundsmen around the country have demonstrated real commitment to their work and on frequent occasions in very difficult circumstances. There is some impressive work going on at racecourses around the country and the panel has chosen very worthy winners.”
Dale Gibson from The Professional Jockeys Association said: "We all appreciate the hard work that the ground staff put in day in day out and without their effort racing simply would not take place.”
Musselburgh Racecourse general manager, Bill Farnsworth, said the award was a “truly great result” against strong competition.
He said: “Mark and his team deserve great credit for this Award and it reflects the dedication and hard work which goes into the track and grounds at Musselburgh throughout the year.
“Working alongside our clerk of the course, Harriet Graham, we undoubtedly have one of the strongest ground staff in the country and I don’t think anyone who has visited the course would object to Musselburgh’s team receiving this accolade.”
This latest award follows on from Musselburgh being recognised for its Operational Excellence in the Racecourse Association Showcase Awards. The East Lothian track has also been nominated for the Racecourse of the Year title in the Betview Awards which will be judged in May.

LUCINDA AND NICKY DOUBLE TOPS AT AYR
ONE off, one on. That was the verdict on Ayr’s two day Victor Chandler New Year Festival.
Day one on Monday went ahead but Tuesday was called off due to high winds endangering the safety of staff in the Race Tech truck responsible for beaming pictures and sound from the course.
Monday’s action saw doubles for trainers Lucinda Russell and Nicky Richards and jockeys Peter Buchanan and Dougie Costello.
Lucinda won the opening race, the European Breeders’ Fund National Hunt Novices Hurdle, with Nuts N Bolts (5/4) left clear at the final fence after the favourite Super Duty (8/11) fell to come home by 13 lengths from Higgs Boson.
The Perth trainer had to wait until the final race to complete her double with Knockando (7/1) in the Best Odds Guaranteed At Victor Chandler Novices Handicap Hurdle. Both horses were ridden by stable jockey Peter Buchanan.
The well backed Getting Ready (13/8) landed the victorchandler.com Maiden Hurdle under Dougie Costello in the black and white silks made famous by Monet’s Garden for Nicky Richards who followed up with Dowd’s Destiny (11/10 fav), also ridden by Costello un the Beginners Chase.
Jim Goldie saddled Bene Lad (2/1 fav) to win the Bet Mobile At victorchandler.com Handicap Chase under a positive Richie McGrath ride and a similar front running performance earned Teenage Idol (9/4) the Bet Live At victorchandler.com Handicap Hurdle for trainer Evelyn Slack and her granddaughter jockey Emma Sayer.

Perth Racecourse Reclaims Best Small Racecourse in Scotland and North East of England Award
Perth Racecourse is delighted to announce that it has been awarded the title of ‘Best Small Racecourse in Scotland and the North East of England’, topping off a fantastic 2011 season.
The award, which was recently granted by the Racecourse Club, concludes a highly successful year for Perth Racecourse. The Racegoers Club awards are keenly contested by racegoers throughout the UK. With Racegoers Club membership comprising almost 6,000 of the sport’s keenest supporters and members going racing on average 31 time per year, no one could be better qualified to pass judgement on which courses deserve recognition, making the awards mean even more to the winning courses.
This is the third time in the past five years that Perth Racecourse has been voted the Best Small Racecourse in Scotland and the North East of England.
Sam Morshead, General Manager at Perth Racecourse, says, “We’re honoured to have been presented with this award. To win the title of Best Small Racecourse in Scotland and the North East of England is a great accolade for us and demonstrates that the Perth Racecourse experience is one that is enjoyed by regular racing fans.”
He continues, “The Racegoers Club criteria for winning this award are based around the visitors overall enjoyment. We are now planning and working towards ‘raising the bar’ even further for all our visitors next year and we will do all we can to ensure that the high expectations of all our visitors are achieved, if not exceeded."

All students will receive admission for only £5 on production of a valid NUS card, and the race course will be opened into one enclosure at one price of only £13 on Thursday 29th December.
The racecourse may have reduced entrance price for the day, however it has not reduced the quality of the card- race goers are in for post Christmas pre New Year treat at the Border Track.
Gates open at 10am with the first race kindly sponsored by Totepool and will be off at 12pm. The National Hunt Maiden hurdle sees Lucinda Russell hoping to give Rhymers Ha’, owned by borders businessman Geoff Adam, his first spin over hurdles while John Wade is entering Runswick Relax. Nicky Richards is choosing between Getting Ready and recent Carlisle scorer Kings Canyon.
The Ashleybank Investments Reg and Betty Tweedie Novice chase is kindly sponsored by David Stevenson to commemorate the tremendous contribution Reg Tweedie gave to Kelso Races for over 20 years as Chairman and Patron. The Two mile Six and half furlong chase may see Lie Forrit, trained near Hawick by Willie Amos, be the star attraction as he bids to build on an impressive chasing debut success at Kelso on December 4. Amos said: “I don’t want to run him on very heavy ground and he’s come out of his race very well. I was over the moon with his win after such a long lay-off and it was a great start because there are plenty of big races to dream about in the future.” Possible opponents for Lie Forrit include Moon Indigo (John Wade) Bold Sir Brian (Lucinda Russell) and Dowd’s Destiny (Nicky Richards).
The third race on the card is kindly sponsored to celebrate a Special (secret) Birthday of a popular local businessman. Lucinda Russell is hoping for a much better run from the Kelso Members Lowflyers horse Great Wisdom, who didn’t enjoy conditions at Carlisle recently. Nicky Richards is also looking at the race for dual winner Simply Ned and Tutchec
Timeform have generously sponsored the feature handicap chase on the card off at 1.35pm. Timeform, the internationally renowned printers who produce the celebrated “Racehorses Of” will present the winning mementos to connections of this competitive chase. Co. Durham-based John Wade is hoping to keep his good run going with Knockavilla, one of several ex-Howard Johnson horses he has purchased. Nicky Richards-trained Sundown Trail, owned by J P McManus, could make his chasing debut while Lucinda Russell’s Pena Dorada is another to consider
The Maitland Carew Family have had a long association with Kelso Races and are also celebrating a Special Birthday at the course. Cumbrian trainer Dianne Sayer is a regular visitor to Kelso and she could be represented by Miss Abbey while Lucy Normile may be entering Strobe.
The penultimate chase on the card is once again kindly sponsored by Timeform and this would be an ideal opportunity for Stuart Coltherd’s Tartan Snow to step up in trip after a cracking third at Haydock recently. Runners trained by Sue Smith are always to be feared and You Know Yourself may try and make amends for his fall in the Monteith Memorial Champion Chase early in December.
The final seventh race off at 3.20 is generously sponsored by totepool and has as always attracted a competitive field, Steve Knight of the tote will be on hand to present winning connections with their mementos after what promises to be a competitive race. Tap Night, owned by Peter Buchanan’s sister Jane, is being aimed at this after his strike at Carlisle last month. Kate Walton’s Allbarkanobite is another possible entry.

Next Race Meeting: Sunday 15th January “New Year Meeting”
The most valuable race at Musselburgh's pre Christmas tomorrow (Tues Dec 20) is the £10,000 Turf TV Handicap Hurdle.
The East Lothian course is holding a 7am precautionary inspection but general manager, Bill Farnsworth, is confident racing should go ahead.
He said: "We should be OK. It is forecast to get to around zero during the night, then plus 4C during the day. We've called a precautionary inspection, just in case it gets to minus 1 but if the forecast is right we should have no problems."
Class horse on view will be the top weight Allow Me, who was a winner at Musselburgh last time out. In form female rider Lucy Alexander takes the ride and her seven pound allowance will be invaluable.
Musselburgh regular Toshi, owned by Livingston business man Eric Nisbet, will be the danger. A close sixth in better company at Haydock, Toshi is reunited with old partner Mark Bradburne.
Toshi's trainer Jim Goldie can land the Racing UK Maiden Hurdle (12.50) with Merchant Of Dubai. A smart performer on the flat, Merchant of Dubai finished a promising second behind Eurohunter on his hurdling debut at Kelso and will improve for the run.
Inform trainer James Ewart will be fancied to extend his winning run with Vosges in the Scottish Racing Beginners’ Chase (1.20). Twice a winner over hurdles at Musselburgh, Vosges chased home the front running Carrietau at the East Lothian venue last month and can go one better today.
A closing fifth in the same race was the well backed Saddler's Deal. Chris Grant's charge had earlier won at Southwell and looks well treated in the Racing UK Handicap Chase, with Denis O'Regan taking the mount.
Gates open at Musselburgh at 10.30am and the first race is off at 12.20pm. Musselburgh kicks off 2012 with a New Year’s Day meeting which also features the traditional athletics New Year Sprint.

Reveleys’ Borders National glory and Lie Forrit stars for Amos
Eyre Square (6-1) gave the Reveley family a fifth Scottish Borders National triumph since 1997 as the John Wade-owned eight-year-old won the John Smith’s-sponsored four-mile showcase on an unforgettable afternoon’s jumping action at Kelso on Sunday 4 December.
James Reveley, riding Eyre Square for his father Keith, beat the gallant Ann Hamilton-trained runner-up Lockstown by a head in a thrilling finale to the £25,000 showpiece with Nicky Richards’ Mister Marker third in the 12-strong field
Mary Reveley, trainer of the inaugural Borders National winner Seven Towers, was thrilled to witness her 22-year-old grandson James’s victory and said: “I’m very proud of him. He’s a very good rider over fences.”
Reveley also starred on the John Wade-trained Always Right (9-4 fav) in the Monteith Memorial Champion Chase, beating the game Skippers Brig in surely one of the best steeplechases ever staged at Kelso.
Willie Amos’s stable star Lie Forrit, on his first start since March 2010, received the loudest cheer of the afternoon after winning the John Smith’s Paris Pike Novices’ Chase on his fencing debut under a supremely-confident Campbell Gillies.
“The dream lives on. He jumped super and he was as fit as I could get him,” said a relieved Amos after Lie Forrit (11-8 fav) sealed a memorable 20-1 brace for the Hawick yard and Gillies with Eurohunter winning the novices’ hurdle at odds of 8-1.
Lady Bluesky (5-1) clinched a Hawick hat-trick in front of a 2500 crowd as Lady Bluesky (5-1) lifted the Kevin Oliver Christmas Handicap Hurdle for Alistair and Ewan Whillans in game fashion.
Super Ally (3-1) was given a superb Timmy Murphy ride to gain his third Kelso victory this season for Andrew Parker and Ray and Anita Green in the novices’ handicap hurdle.

John Smiths have also kindly supported the Novice Chase on the card jointly with Major and Mrs Ivan Straker. The race is named after the Strakers horse Paris Pike a winner of 8 races in his career including the Scottish Grand National. Ivan Straker was hugely instrumental in saving the Grand National when he worked for Seagrams and is now retired and lives in Acomb near Hexham. Star attraction in this could be Lie Forrit if he makes his chasing debut for Newmill On Teviot based Willie Amos who said: “He’s taken a bit longer to come to hand as we fired him late and it had to heal. He’s a classy hurdler and has schooled well over fences.” Cassius, trained near Hawick by Bruce Mactaggart, could also make his first appearance over fences.

Peter was the last Scottish trainer to have a winner at The Cheltenham Festival with Dizzy and he is a huge miss on the Northern racing circuit.
His wife, Doreen and sister Sheila Monteith, will be on hand with a group of friends and family to present the prizes after what promises to be a very competitive event, which has attracted a quality entry including 2010 Scottish National hero Merigo (Andrew Parker) and Always Right (John Wade), who were second and third in last season’s Ayr feature. Another leading Northern contender is Nicky Richards’ Skippers Brig who won the Premier Chase here before finishing a creditable ninth in the John Smith’s Grand National at Aintree. Adding spice to a hot contest are Somerset raiders Take The Breeze and Tamarinbleu trained by Paul Nicholls and David Pipe respectively.
The racecourse are pleased to welcome new sponsors Edinburgh Audi who have joined forces with Melrose Rugby Club to take the penultimate race on the seven race card. Sarah Bell who is Group Marketing Manager of Lomond Audi Group in Glasgow will be in charge of the presentations with Michael Dalgetty of Melrose Rugby Club. Mia Matriarch, trained at Hawick by Donald Whillans, has shown some promise in bumper company and could make her hurdling bow in this. Sandy Thomson, based at Lambden, near Greenlaw, has this in mind for his home-bred mare Little Fifi.
Kevin Oliver a regular sponsor at Kelso and founder of the entrepreneurial property and business consultancy firm has very generously sponsored the 2 mile Handicap Hurdle the third race on the card. Kevin and his wife Ann will be on hand to judge the best turned out and present mementos to the wining connections. Lucinda Russell’s Beidh Tine Anseo was only just touched off when favourite at Kelso on October 15th and has since come fourth at Musselburgh. Freddie Brown, owned by Kelso chairman Johnny Jeffreys, has his first race since finishing fourth at the borders track back in May.
John Anderson of Andersons Quality Butchers has very kindly taken up sponsoring the Novice Hurdle. John Anderson has a highly enviable reputation of being one of the very best quality Butchers in the whole of the Northern region, he and Alan Clydesdale are sharing a party on the day on what promises to be one of Kelso’s best fixtures for some time. Selkirk’s Stuart Coltherd will be hoping for better luck with Talking Sence who unseated his rider at the first at Hexham recently. Master Act, owned by the Border Thistle Racing syndicate and trained at Hawick by Alistair Whillans, is well regarded by connections.
SIS who are Kelso’s media broadcaster to all of Britain’s 10,000 betting shop are sponsoring the final contest of the afternoon. The very successful International media firm provide television coverage for Sky television in partnership with 30 of the other British racecourses. Hamilton Park Racecourse Wins at RCA Showcase Awards
Hamilton Park Racecourse has been recognised for its "Raceday Experience" after winning a UK-wide award in that category at the Racecourse Association’s (RCA) Showcase Awards Dinner, held at Epsom Downs Racecourse.
The Lanarkshire track was voted the best of five finalists after an independent judging panel praised its new Parade Ring Theatre Project as a great example of explaining to customers "what the sport is all about".
For its 2011 season Hamilton Park introduced a number of activities and features as part of the parade ring theatre project. These included:
Educating racegoers using a painted horse to provide them with expert commentary on the anatomy of the racehorse
More proactive and energised rota of raceday presenters including Channel 4’s Derek Thompson, ATR’s Gordon Brown and the BBC’s Geoff Webster
Increased horseman interviews with top names such as Paul Hanagan, Silvestre de Sousa and Hayley Turner
Encouraging crowd participation via children’s fancy dress competition, tombola giveaways and Ladies’ Night fashion competition
Increased social entertainment through live interviews with high-profile guests including Harry Redknapp and Katie Waissell
On presenting the award to Hamilton Park chief executive Vivien Kyles, joint host for the evening David Fraser commented: "This initiative showed a great connection to the core product and is really trying to explain to customers what the sport is all about."
Vivien Kyles thanked the judging panel and added: "We are absolutely thrilled to collect this prize which was accepted on behalf of all the staff at Hamilton Park as it truly was a team effort.
"Our prime objective was to offer racegoers added value by extending the entertainment beyond the track action and including the natural amphitheatre of the parade ring. Historically we would get crowds of 50-100 around the parade ring on ‘normal’ days however this grew to 300-500 this year which was all the evidence we needed to tell us the project was a big success with racegoers.
"So this award is further and very welcome proof of the project’s success and it is an area we will again focus on and aim to further improve in 2012 for the benefit of all racegoers."
The RCA Showcase Awards celebrate the overall excellence and innovation that has being shown by racecourses across the country and were hosted by the Racecourse Association in conjunction with Racing for Change. Doncaster Racecourse was crowned Showcase Champion for 2011, thanks to their overall innovation, excellence and marketing strategies.
Overall, there were 86 initiatives entered for consideration from 37 racecourses, as well as group submissions from Jockey Club Racecourses and Northern Racing and Events. They were judged by an independent panel consisting of Louise Agran (Racing Post), Janet Uttley (Visit England), Abigail Sawyer (BBC), David Fraser (Harrison:Fraser) and was chaired by Chris McFadden of Racing Enterprises Ltd.
Hamilton Park’s competitors in the Raceday Experience category were Fontwell Park, Kempton Park, Newcastle and Windsor.

Six Figure Sum Raised by Prestigious Charity Events
The Prince’s Charities in Scotland have been given a significant cash boost as a result of two high profile events. The Perth Racecourse Charities Race Day and The Stagecoach Gala Dinner set out with the aim of raising a six-figure sum for The Prince’s Charities in Scotland and succeeded in raising an incredible £236,000 for the group of not-for-profit organisations of which The Duke of Rothesay is President.
The First Minister, who backed the Charities Race Day since it was first proposed, said, “I am very proud to have been involved with this project. The Charities Race Day and Gala Dinner were an incredible success and the organising committee and Perth Racecourse must be very pleased with what they have achieved for The Prince’s Charities in Scotland. This significant contribution will help the Prince’s Charities in their work to provide young people with the skills and education, both personal and professional, that they require to become active participants in today’s employment market.”
The Charities Race Day, which took place on the 20th August 2011, assisted in raising the grand total funds, Sam Morshead, Racecourse Manager said, “I am confident that The Charities Race Day has successfully raised awareness of The Prince’s Charities in Scotland. Whilst the fixture also provided a wonderful family raceday that will live long in people’s memories.”
Meanwhile the Stagecoach Gala Dinner which took place the evening before the Charities Race Day, featured a fantastic range of auction prizes including a 3 night trip to Dubai, VIP tickets to the Edinburgh Tattoo and a 2 night break at the Gleneagles Hotel.
Lady Sara Cornwallis, Chair of the Fundraising Committee said, “In today’s difficult economic climate, it can be extremely difficult for young people to have access to opportunities. However, thanks to the generosity of those guests who attended both the Gala Dinner and the raceday, and to those offered substantial bids within the auction and the raffle, The Prince’s Charities in Scotland will continue to assist young people to make life changing decisions and change the course of their life.”
