The racing industry employs thousands of people in a wide variety of roles including stable staff, trainers, farriers, vets, doctors, racecourse groundsmen, administrative staff, jockeys, bookmakers, and many more.

The Scottish Racing Academy
The Academy is a partnership between The Northern Racing School, East Lothian Council and Oatridge College. Students, who should weigh less than 11 stone and may never have sat on a horse before, are able to take the foundation course (NVQ1) at Oatridge College. The course lasts just twelve weeks and prepares students for work with racehorses.

Successful candidates, may progress to take the Apprenticeship course (NVQ2) in racehorse care and key training skills, at the Northern Racing College based in Doncaster. The Apprenticeship course takes 12 months to complete, before students decide whether to carry on and complete the Advanced Apprenticeship course (NVQ3).

Graduate Training Schemes

The BHB Graduate Development Programme is organised by the British Horseracing Board. The scheme is predominately for students who have just completed their degrees, although recent graduates and sandwich year students may also be considered. The course consists of a two month paid placement with a racing organisation (such as the BHB, a racecourse, the Press Association, a bookmaker or a stud) followed by a two week residential course in Newmarket.

The scheme affords enthusiastic students, of an excellent academic standard, a useful leg up into the world of horseracing. The Darley Flying Start is a two year course starting in August each year for anyone of any age from anywhere. Living and learning in Kentucky, Newmarket, Dubai, County Kildare and Hunter Valley in Australia, students will learn from the worlds leading professionals. Other Training Schemes

The Jockeys' Employment and Training Scheme (JETS) is designed to help jockeys who hold or who have held race-riding licences in the UK. The ultimate aim is to get jockeys to recognise and fulfil their potential by helping them to develop a lifelong career plan. The Joss Collins Scholarship gives two young people (aged 17-25) the opportunity to spend a year working at a top stud farm in Australia, New Zealand, Britain, Ireland, South Africa or the US.
