Situated at the top of Princes Street, a stone's throw from Edinburgh Waverley train station, The Balmoral is a hugely impressive building.

Inside, the hotel offers something to tempt every palate - but our favourite is the excellent afternoon teas!

There are 36 Best Western hotels across Scotland - so you might even be able to hop from one to another as you tour the five Scottish tracks.

Hamilton, Musselburgh and Perth are all fairly well served. Racegoers to Ayr might find the hotels at Irvine or Dumfries useful. While Kelso is not served particularly well by Best Western, the views along the 50 minute drive from the hotels at Moffat or Lockerbie would be worth paying for!

The hotel is housed in the old Scotsman newspaper building - and has been beautifully refurbished with many references to the previous occupants.

Located on Waverley Bridge, opposite Edinburgh Waverley train station and between Princes Street and the Royal Mile, The Scotsman is an ideal base from which to explore the city.

The rooms, the restaurant and the service are all good - but the best thing of all is breakfast - the best in Edinburgh!

Thistle Hotels

From Aberdeen to Irvine

Of the eight Thistle Hotels in Scotland, four of them are in Aberdeen - which may not be of much use to you for racing purposes.

However, the remainder are all situated either on the West Coast or in the central belt - so they are worth keeping in mind if you are planning to explore Ayr, Hamilton Park and Musselburgh.
